A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Video Introduction

Thank you to Misha Teramura for introducing A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Misha Teramura is Assistant Professor of English at the University of Toronto. His work focuses on early modern English theater, with a special interest in lost plays. His articles have appeared in such journals as Shakespeare QuarterlyEnglish Literary HistoryThe Review of English Studies, and The Chaucer Review, covering such topics as Shakespeare’s sources, Elizabethan espionage, pseudo-medieval prophecies, early modern theories of friendship, and the Renaissance reception of the African playwright Terence. His current book project revisits Shakespeare’s use of Chaucer as a way to complicate recent assessments of Shakespeare as a “literary dramatist.”

Many thanks to my friend Joey Bianco of Whim Wham for the animated video elements.

  1. Thank you, so many interesting threads to consider- really appreciate your guidance.

  2. I was specially interested in the reference to how we visualise the fairies. I realise that I haven’t really considered that aspect, but tended to read the play as if the fairies were just small people. However, I think when I re-read it and try out different images, it will lead to much more interesting interpretations of the fairy scenes, and their place in the whole story. Thank you for such an exciting and far-ranging over-view of the play.

  3. great intro thank you Misha Teramura! helped open my mind to enjoying this play vs finding it ‘annoying’ . I mean I do love this play yet find it buggy. So… am excited to read with our virtual global group today… and see hear feel what transforms !

  4. A superb introduction to a play which I have read and watched many times. Professor Teramura has touched upon familiar themes but suggests how we can thoughtfully revise or enrich our experience with MND.
