King John: Video Introduction

Thank you to Emma Smith for providing our introduction to King John.

Emma Smith is Professor of Shakespeare Studies at the University of Oxford. Her podcast lectures “Approaching Shakespeare”—including on King John—are available at podcasts.ox.ac.uk. Her most recent book is This Is Shakespeare, out in the U.S. and in paperback in the U.K. at the end of March 2020.

Many thanks to my friend Joey Bianco of Whim Wham for the animated video elements.

  1. I loved the reminder of the women and their position as mothers of the male characters. They are so different from each other, and make such strong impressions, each in her own way. Also a very interesting point about scepticism and the differences from the underlying assumptions of the other history plays. Thank you for such an exciting introduction.

  2. Thank you for that insightful introduction, Emma Smith! How I’d love to attend your class and listen to your lectures! So nice to meet you over video. Take care, and thank you again.

  3. This is the first play I’ll reading– I’m very excited! This was a wonderful introduction (even without a backdrop of books) I look forward to the rest of the year together 🙂
